The Trailblazing J-R&B Queen – The Legacy and Timeless Songs of Double
Before R&B became widely embraced in the Japanese mainstream, there was an artist who stayed true to the genre and carved out a new path. Their name was “Double”: a duo whose presence, music, and visual style brought authentic R&B to Japan with undeniable impact.
Do you remember the first time you heard one of their songs and felt that jolt of inspiration?

A Sister Duo from Niigata (1998)
Double was originally formed by two sisters: SACHIKO (older sister) and TAKAKO (younger sister). They began performing regularly at clubs on U.S. military bases and officially debuted in 1998 with the single "For Me"At a time when R&B still felt fresh and unfamiliar in Japan, their sound, polished vocal harmonies, fashion, and bold visuals quickly earned them a devoted fanbase especially among young women.
Tragedy Strikes: The Sudden Loss of SACHIKO (1999)
Just as their popularity was starting to rise, tragedy struck. In 1999, just before the release of their first prologue album Crystal, SACHIKO suddenly passed away from a subarachnoid hemorrhage at the age of 25. The news devastated fans and, above all, left TAKAKO facing a profound personal loss. Many feared she might end her music career altogether. But TAKAKO made the courageous decision to continue carrying on the name Double as a solo project.
The Comeback That Marked a New Chapter (2000)
In 2000, TAKAKO returned with two singles — “handle feat. F.O.H” and “U.” It was more than just a comeback — it was a declaration. In interviews, she shared how they had influenced the poetic, abstract lyricism in their work, often inspired by classical Japanese waka. This wasn’t just R&B. It was deeply personal, uniquely Japanese, and emotionally rich.
