Our Microphone Collection

Our mic collection has both tube and FET condenser mics along with dynamic mics to serve and give your vocal and instrument each specific tonal character on your recording. Combine with our tube and solid-state preamps with compressors and equalizers, our recording chain will give you various flavors of excellent sound.

Nowadays, you can buy a decent microphone and audio interface to start recording yourself at home. So why need to go and record at a music studio? To make a professional good sounding recording, it requires more than that. Knowledge, experience, time and gear investments as well as a dedicated space for recording, not to mention about the postproduction process like audio editing, mixing and mastering which all comes into play in making a professional sounding record. If you love to be an audio engineer, it is great to start learning and investing in all these things.

However, you don’t need to invest a lot of time and money in buying expensive pro-level equipment where you can come and get professional recordings at Goldilocks Playroom. We use high quality microphones, preamps and channel strip found in large commercial recording studios to serve you at a fraction of the price.

High-Quality Preamps

Top-class recording chain to record your vocal/voice and instrument includes engineer, recording and control room at affordable price.

It’s not only a great microphone that plays a crucial part of recording sound, but also a preamp is as important factor, if not more so to make a good sounding recording.

In audio world, everything all adds up. Some are more important than others while some are complementary. Using an expensive mic with low-quality preamp can get you a worse result than using a less expensive mic with a better preamp. In fact, from microphone to preamp to compressor and equalizer into audio interface/converter to computer as well as cables, everything plays their own big roles in the process. Our recording service doesn’t focus only on the microphones, but the whole recording chain needs to complement each other for capturing great sound.

Our Recording Guide and Workflow

  • Getting started with the initial communication:

Tell us your desired date and time, contact information, expected numbers of people attending and duration required. We will then ask you about what type of project it is (vocal, voice-over or instrument recording) and how you would like to approach your recording session and any specific requests you’d like to make. From there, we will determine the scope of the plan to complete it.

  • Schedule the recording session:

We will schedule time and confirm with you. After that, the booking confirmation and invoice will be sent via email. If you have a brief of your song such as genre, song structure, demo, backing track, lyrics, reference material, etc., please send them to us before the session, it will help us to understand your vision better and the recording process will be much smoother.

  • On the recording day:

We will start by briefly going through the steps of your recording session, getting you feel comfortable in the room, setting up and testing instruments and equipment. After that, we will check the microphones, check the headphones and have you run through your song for sound-checking and warming up before we start recording. Once all set, we will begin tracking.

I’m new and don’t know much about the whole process of recording, what do I have to prepare?

No recording knowledge or special equipment is required. We will review and arrange the best recording method and plan for you as well as guide you through the process. You can come with a peace of mind.

Is your recording service only for vocal and voice recording?

No, our recording service also supports many instruments.

What types of instruments can be recorded at the studio besides vocal and voice recording?

Acoustic/Electric Guitar, Violin, Viola, Cello, Sax, Flute, Bass (DI and Acoustic), Keyboard/Synth, Digital Piano (already provided in the recording booth).

It’s good that the studio has many mics to choose, but how do I know which mic would best suit my voice?

After knowing some details of your project, our engineer will try to select the right mic that will best suit your voice.

How long should it take to record a song

Depending on the genre, composition, arrangement, experience, etc., recording a song with a well-rehearsed band takes about a full-day session (8-12 hours) in general, and a singer will of course take a lot less time than a full band - Well prepared and rehearsed are key. We recommend 2 hour-recording session for one song is generally a good-safe booking time.

When booking my recording session, do I have to consider including additional time for data editing, file bouncing, mixing and mastering etc.?

Please let us know how long you would like to record your actual performance and any other addition requests you may have. Then we will inform you of how long the session should be booked and spared for additional time on adding/modifying/arranging tracks and takes as well as files and data management and delivery. We normally do not do on-site mixing and mastering in your recording session. Having a long session and many hours of listening and working with audio can make human ears lose the perspectives when making critical audio decisions. That’s why the post-production should be treated as different stages after your recording session for better results. We offer our post-production services separately or you can choose our recording plans that come with mixing and mastering.

Would there be any additional charges for more people?

Our recording service is an hourly rate and there are no additional charges for more people, please let us know how many people would attend the recording session and we will prepare the rest for you.

How many people can record at the same time in the recording booth?

Our recording booth can be able to support 2 people for recording at the same time and in some cases can be up to 3 people, depending on the type of application.

Can I change or cancel after booking?

Yes, there's no cancellation fee when notification is made 7 days prior to the book date. Cancellation fee will be applied by 50% of your total price between 6 days to a day before the booked date and 100% on the day. Changing or mis-schedule your booked date and time will be considered as a cancellation. For first time user on our recording service, you will be asked to pay for a deposit in advance.

Can I use the piano in the recording room during my recording session?

Of course, please use it to accompany your session. If you plan to record with the piano, please let us know during the booking process. There are no additional charges for using or recording the piano during your session.

What are the REC and Mix+Master Plans?

We offer three price plans for you to choose with other options to get your music completed and ready to release at special prices when you record with us.

About the plans, if I want to request a revision during mixing and mastering stages, would there be an extra charge?

You will get one free revision to request adjustments during each stage ex. in one revision, you can request us to adjust one or multiple things at the same time. Additional revisions are ¥2,750 each.

After my recording session, how would you deliver the files?

We will upload the files on cloud storage and file sharing services like GigaFile, Dropbox, Google Drive etc. and notify you via email to download the files.
