Timeless J-R&B Classics from the Late ’90s and 2000s
If you’re a fan of Japanese R&B (J-R&B) or you’re just discovering it for the first time, you’re in for a treat. The late ’90s to early 2000s was a golden era for J-R&B—a time when talented artists blended smooth vocals, soulful melodies, and modern grooves to create music that could stand alongside the best of the global R&B scene.
In our previous feature, we introduced Double, one of the most iconic names in J-R&B. This time, we’re diving deeper into the era, highlighting other legendary artists whose music still feels fresh more than 20 years later. Whether you’re building the ultimate 90s/2000s Japanese R&B playlist or looking for inspiration for your own music, these tracks are essential listening.

🎧Sugar Soul – Kanashimi no Hana ni (1998)
A true J-R&B classic. Sugar Soul is perhaps best known for “Garden” with Kj from Dragon Ash, but this track showcases the soulful depth of her sound. She also collaborated with Zeebra and other major figures in the Japanese hip-hop/R&B crossover scene.
🎧Tina – I’ll Be There (1999)
The advance vinyl release sold out instantly. With her powerful, dynamic voice and refined track selection, Tina made waves in Japan’s club scene and remains one of the most respected female R&B singers in the country.
🎧bird – SOULS (1999)
bird’s unique vocal tone blends strength and warmth, riding effortlessly over her jazzy, soulful tracks. Many international listeners may have recently discovered her through her performance on “THE FIRST TAKE”.
🎧Momoe Shimano – 45℃ (1999)
With a smooth, sultry voice and poetic lyrics, Momoe Shimano carved her own path in the Japanese R&B scene. A pioneer of Japanese neo-soul, she enjoyed a loyal following among DJs and R&B enthusiasts.
🎧Full Of Harmony – TAKE IT SLOW (2000)
One of Japan’s most skilled vocal harmony groups, FOH’s polished sound easily rivals American R&B acts. While “I Believe” is their most famous hit, “TAKE IT SLOW” is a smooth, underrated gem. Also check out their Christmas collaboration with Miwa Yoshida from Dreams Come True “Wishing A Special Christmas To You”.
🎧LL Brothers – That’s My Life (2004)
A dance-performing sibling duo who brought an international R&B sound to Japan. For fans of upbeat grooves, “D.O.G” is a must, while “Marry Me” showcases their softer side.
🎧SOULHEAD – YOU CAN DO THAT (2004)
Sisters YOSHIKA and TSUGUMI combined R&B duo, hip-hop, and electronic elements to create a distinctly 2000s J-R&B vibe. YOSHIKA has also written songs for artists like Crystal Kay, including the hit “Candy.”
Why These Songs Still Matter Today
These aren’t just nostalgic throwbacks. They’re timeless works of art created by artists with real skill and a clear musical vision. In an era when R&B wasn’t yet mainstream in Japan, they pursued authenticity over trends, leaving behind songs that still inspire listeners and musicians today.
You can stream these tracks on Spotify, Apple Music, and other platforms. Add them to your playlist, and you’ll see how well they hold up next to today’s R&B releases.
As we wrote in our earlier blog post, Modern Musicians, Take Notes—The Past Holds the Key, there’s incredible value in learning from classic tracks, not just listening to new releases. Incorporating the essence of these songs into your own style can give your music more depth and timeless appeal.
